China’s plan for a green future at risk China moves towards carbon neutrality, but remains a large stakeholder in “dirty” investments.

China’s $2.9T coronavirus stimulus package fails to prioritize clean energy, and turns instead to dirty industries (high carbon energy and infrastructure) like coal to kickstart the economy (CarbonBrief).

China reveals fiscal subsidies to promote new energy vehicles including BEVs, PHEVs, and FCVs, effectively extending vehicle subsidies through 2022 (ICCT).

Chinese President Xi Jinping publicly pledges at the UN General Assembly to be carbon neutral by 2060. The announcement is significant as China is currently the world’s largest emitter of CO2, but the high-carbon stimulus package puts the UN pledge in question.

China hosts some of the biggest battery manufacturers: CATL, BYD, and Guoxuan High-Tech. Greenpeace is actively pushing Beijing to implement policies around end-of-life, recycling, and ethical raw materials (Greenpeace).
