Europe catalyzes support for energy storage Major countries in Europe stay on track for the European Green Deal.

The UK revealed a green industrial revolution plan to support 220k jobs over the decade, including £1.3B for EV charging infrastructure and £1B for electrification of vehicles including the mass production of batteries (UK energy white paper, 10 point plan).

Increased financial support for the EU: €1B for battery projects in 2020 and €10B of grants over the next decade. Europe has goals to be climate neutral by 2050 (European Commision).

Brexit free trade agreements discriminate against trade in lower-carbon electric vehicles due to “rules of origin”, as the bulk of electric car parts come from Asian countries. UK policy will build local supply chains for batteries manufactured in the UK or EU (The Times).

Batteries from the EU need to be sustainable, high-performing, and safe over their entire life cycle to promote competitive sustainability and to minimize the environmental impact of batteries. A new mechanism of "battery passports" will be introduced to ensure responsible mineral sourcing along the supply chain (European Commision). Overview
