TCO & ROI Analysis for HD Regional vs Long-Haul Trucking Regionally focused economic policies, fuel/energy cost, duty cycle, charging infrastructure, etc. are important factors that influence Total Cost of Ownership TCO. To achieve cost parity with diesel, OEMs and operators must focus on hitting the right KPIs. Data released by Cummins illustrates the cost saving benefits of BEV compared to other fuels (when energy is 0.15 $/kWh). The projections assume a 3.03.7x increase in upfront vehicle and charging infrastructure costs. By reducing the cost of the battery through a lower $$$/kWh or applying smaller but fast charging battery packs, ROI can be decreased. Many fleet level CFOʼs performing the risk analysis are seeking a break-even ROI of 3 years using a 812% discount rate in order to justify the switch from ICE.
Regional logistics applications typically travel 150 km per day. This reduces the dependance on large batteries if infrastructure can be put in place for short duration opportunistic charging 12 times per day. Smaller, high-cycle, and fast charge batteries have shown to produce a strong TCO and short ROI in these scenarios.

Long-haul logistics needs increased on-board stored energy to account for the sustained high tractive effort requirements. Improvements in $$$/kWh, Wh/kg, and Wh/L are all critical barriers in this space to achieve the ROI and TCO that will lead to mass adoption. Early e-HDT trials have also shown clear performance benefits.
