Grid-following vs. Grid-forming Energy storage PCSs come in one of two different configurations: Grid-following systems are only able to output to an existing, stable grid. They can't operate independently during outages without backups like generators. The vast majority of PCSs for utility-scale storage are grid-following. Grid-forming systems are able to operating in most conditions as grid-following, but should there be an outage, they can form their own voltage and frequency reference, enabling operation in both connected and isolated ("islanded") modes - like powering microgrids or critical sites during blackouts. This independence makes them essential for resilience in unreliable or decentralized grids.
