Roundup of Developments in Commercial & Industrial C&I Business and Technology Business Trends in the C&I sector

Revenue stacking has become a key requirement for many C&I BESS projects to meet investment thresholds, with demand-charge reduction alone often insufficient in mature markets.

Strong growth is expected through 20262036, with industry forecasts indicating high-teens CAGR; in the near term, data centers are emerging as a fast-growing C&I application, particularly in the U.S. and Europe.

BESS-as-a-Service and similar business models are gaining traction; instead of high upfront costs of buying and maintaining assets, the C&I customers pay a periodic subscription fee that includes guaranteed asset performance and upkeep.

Technology Trends in the C&I sector

The C&I market is increasingly served by modular, integrated AC block systems in the 100150 kW / 200300 kWh range, typically featuring integrated inverters, liquid cooling, and hybrid PV-ready) functionality.

LFP chemistry dominates, with a trend toward larger-format cells and higher-capacity battery modules as suppliers seek to reduce system-level costs and improve energy density.

Sodium-ion remains at an early stage in C&I applications, with limited commercial deployment and no broad cost advantage over LFP evident in 2025.

Software and energy management capabilities have overtaken hardware as the primary differentiator, as core battery hardware has become increasingly standardized and commoditized.
