Interconnection Bottlenecks Grow; Calls to Prioritize Readiness over First-Come, First-Served With the BESS market boom, queues to secure BESS grid connection have exploded in key Western markets, and some markets (e.g. Germany) are highly over-subscribed prioritizes with project applications generally treated by order as opposed to readiness or system value. Also, the time spent in the queue for projects commissioned in 2024 is over several years, as shown in several US ISO markets. The Energy Storage Europe Association has called for prioritization mechanisms and differentiated queue management, and recommendations for making co-location, cable pooling and hybrid grid connection available for all projects.
