Batteries in Data Centers From Grid Interface BESS to Rack Integrated Backup Units) Modern data centers increasingly use batteries not just for backup power, but also for grid flexibility, efficiency, and improved power architecture. Battery applications can be grouped into three main tiers: Data Center Grid-interface Battery Energy Storage BESS
Traditional Batteries Housed Uninterruptible Power Supply UPS
Rack-Level / Integrated Battery Backup Units BBU

Large utility-scale battery systems sit at the grid interface of a data center to support peak shaving, frequency regulation and renewable integration.
Batteries in the UPS in the data center facility hall, to provide short-duration ride-through power during grid outages until generators start.
Batteries integrated to the power rack in the IT hall, moves energy storage closer to the IT load to reduce conversion losses and adapt to variable loads, and to support new power architecture without heavy UPS footprints.
