Trend Comparison: NHTSA Battery-Related Recalls, 2025 vs 2024 Classifying publicly available recall defect and cause into defined broad failure categories appeared to show that Controls, Software or Diagnostics related issues led reported recalls in 2024 relative to Module/Pack-level assembly issues in 2025. Cell-level issues appeared to lead potentially affected vehicles in 2025. Though fewer in 2025, Controls, Software or Diagnostics related issues affected significant vehicles. Batteries in xEV vehicles led reported recalls 70%) relative to those used in ICE, ICE/xEV or Trailers. Emerging risks from issues related to Environmental sealing & contamination; Electrical interconnects & protection (outside the battery); System integration/Mechanical Assembly. Approximately 67 reported battery-related recalls in 2025 relative to 61 in 2024. Distributed nature of potential risk highlights need for safety considerations across layers.
