Silane Precursor for Silicon Additions in the Anode
Strategies to incorporate Si through silane use
Silane is used mainly in three ways to incorporate Si in the anode material: forming particles 3D) coating 2D) and nanowires/columns 1D. A more stable secondary phase is used to control the expansion of Si or to act as a substrate.
3D particles
CVD can be used to directly grow Si particle as the anode active material such as core shell and yolk shell design principles or simple nanoparticles in the porosity of a matrix e.g., porous carbon
2D coating
Other substrates, usually carbonaceous materials such as CNT, carbon black, etc. can be used to grow a coating of Si through vapor deposition
1D structure
Controlled growth direction and rate can be used to form 1D structures, called nanowires or nanocolumns. The profile shape and chemistry can be managed through temperature and pressure gradients
