Silicon Key Trends The focus in 2025 was mainly on Si-C anode types and their increasing market share. Si market events in the US and Europe were focused on industrialization. In China funding of several projects by the government and R&D by the large cell makers were announced which aim to close the gap with the high energy anode technologies by the Western players. Korea has been the meeting point of scaled production and high-energy products.
More western Si anode makers enter the market In both the US and Europe development of high-energy Si anode startups continues. In Sep ‘25 Sila starts operation in Moses Lake starting with 25 GWh In May ‘25 Altech Advanced Materials AG commissioned its pilot plant in Saxony
Both western and local players active in Korea
China races to high energy Si anodes
Activity on SiOx anodes continue
The activities on Si anodes are pushed by component makers notably ramp-ups by Daejoo, Posco and Hansol.
For years, ball milling has been the standard in China to prepare Si-based anodes. A strong focus shift to Si-C in 2025 was publicized.
SiOx is the first class of Si anodes that entered the market but it keeps being improved to increase its mix ratio.
Western companies announcements: Group14 acquires 100% ownership of BAM factory from SK; Nexeonʼs announcement of production readiness in Gunsan.
More than 15 projects were reported in Aug ‘25 to receive investment with focus on high energy SiC anodes and use of CVD to incorporate Si.
Patent publications by battery producers such as CATL published on SiOx anodes in 2025, and SiOx show that development in this class of materials continues in the market.
