Prelithiation of Silicon Anodes - System-Level Enabler to Offset First-Cycle Lithium Loss in Silicon-Rich Anodes Prelithiation introduces lithium into silicon anodes prior to cell formation to compensate for irreversible lithium loss during SEI formation and structural accommodation. In high-silicon anodes, significant first-cycle lithium consumption and large volume expansion reduce usable cathode capacity and limit achievable energy density. By supplying lithium in advance, prelithiation improves first-cycle efficiency, enables higher silicon utilization, and stabilizes early cycling behavior. Practical implementation can be achieved through chemical, electrochemical deposition, or lithium additive-based approaches; however, challenges remain related to process complexity, safety cost, and scalability.
Benefits of Prelithiation:
Improves first-cycle efficiency: Compensates for irreversible lithium loss associated with SEI formation on silicon.
Enables higher silicon utilization: Preserves cathode lithium inventory, allowing increase silicon content in EV anodes.
Enhances early-cycle stability: Reduces mechanical and interfacial stress during initial lithiation.
Supports higher cell-level energy density: Improves active lithium balance in silicon-rich EV cells. Challenges and Trade-Off:
Manufacturing complexity: Additional processing steps increase cost and integration difficulty.
Safety considerations: Handling lithium-containing materials require stringent process control.
Scalability and uniformity: Achieving controllable, homogeneous prelithiation remains challenging at gigafactory scale. EV Relevance: Prelithiation is primarily relevant for EV cells targeting higher silicon loadings, where first-cycle lithium loss becomes a limiting factor for energy density and cycle life.
