In Situ Measurement of Electrolyte Oxidation via Mass Spectrometry and Three-electrode Cells Compared to an expensive Online Electrochemical Mass Spectrometry OEMS) test, a 3-electrode cell using the positive electrode material of interest as the working electrode, an LFP counter electrode, and a Vulcan carbon sense electrode can directly measure the net current flow of undesired side reactions at low cost. However, there are multiple possible parallel side reactions that may occur between an electrode and electrolyte; separating the contributions of oxygen reduction and dissolved TM ions to the sense electrode current does require calibration via the more expensive OEMS measurement.
This method paper demonstrates an economical method to directly quantify evolved oxygen and transition metal TM) dissolution from electrolyte oxidation reactions using a 3-electrode cell with a voltage-controlled sense electrode to selectively measure lattice oxygen and dissolved TMs.
